Photobiomodulation Therapy as a Possible New Approach in COVID-19: A Systematic Review
Given the great importance of biological mechanisms for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases such as COVID-19, the aim of this systematic review was to analyze the use of PBMT as a possible new approach as a complementary therapy in the treatment of patients affected by COVID-19.
The use of phototherapy in treating illnesses has been reported since Ancient Greece, initially called Heliotherapy, and consisted of leaving the sick exposed to the sun to cure their ailments, as shown in Table 1 [29]. In 1918, during the crisis caused by the Spanish flu, phototherapy proved to be a great ally in the treatment of this disease, being pointed out as one of the most significant factors in reducing mortality. Since then, several studies have been carried out to understand better the beneficial effects of light, especially blue, violet, red, and infrared light [29].
